Business Btec Level 2 Coursework Definition

This course has been designed to help give students the skills, knowledge and understanding which will prepare them for working life, now and in the future, as confident individuals and members of society. The units on the BTEC course encourage students to be creative, to manage their work, to become financially capable and to develop a can-do attitude. The course enables students to develop employability skills, such as the ability to problem solve, to communicate effectively and to work well in a team as well as independently.

Course Overview

All students complete four units of work. 3 of these will be assessed through a coursework based project and 1 will be assessed through an online exam.

In year 10 students will study:

  • Unit 3: Promoting a Brand (coursework based)
  • Unit 2: Finance in Business (exam based)

In year 11 students will study:

  • Unit 1: Enterprise in the Business World (coursework unit)
  • Unit 4: Principles of Customer Service (coursework unit)

All the coursework based units involve extended writing tasks. Whilst the exam focuses on students mathematical skills and abilities in the context of a business’s finance, the exam will also feature some extended writing questions.

Assessment

The course is graded using: level 1, pass, merit, distinction and distinction*. These are equivalent to GCSE grades in the following way:

Students BTEC grade is worked out based on their attainment across the four units of work. Though it is important to note that for students to attain a pass grade (C) then they will need to gain at least a pass to gain at least a pass one of the two core units (Unit 2: Finance for Business and Unit 1: Enterprise in the Business World).

  1. Exam based units (Unit 1, 3 and 4)
    Students will be required to produce detailed reports, PowerPoint’s, leaflets and other documents based on set assignments (these are available on our curriculum pages).
  2. External Examination (Unit 2)
    At the end of year 10 students will sit an exam. The exam will be made up of a variety of different question styles and will cover everything the students have looked at in lessons from year 10. It will be completed online and marked by the exam board. The exam is split into a variety of questions including:
    • Calculation questions
    • Multiple choice questions
    • Short sentence questions
    • Longer, structured questions

Home Learning Policy

We will only set homework that is useful! It will either be to check understanding or to prepare or finish coursework task or revision for in class assessments. Because we will only set homework relevant to the work student are completing in class, failure to complete the homework will hamper progress and so, in line with the school policy, a detention will be issued for incomplete homework.

Business level 2 BTEC

BTEC Level 2 Diploma (Edexcel)

It is a vocational broad based qualification at Level 2 that provides knowledge and understanding of this vocational area.

You will examine

If you decide to study for the BTEC First Diploma in Business you will study 4 Core Units and 4 Specialist Vocational Units this is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at A* – C. Assessment will be a combination of course work and 2 exams.

More than just a course

Students who take this course find it very useful because it gives them an understanding of business and because they enjoy coursework assessment as well as the examined based assessments. (2 Units have exams).
How You Will Learn

Well-qualified, highly experienced and enthusiastic Business Studies tutors will teach you.  You will learn through a wide range of learning activities including class discussions, group presentations, business role-play, business visits, work experience, individual research and one-to-one tutorials.

Entry Requirements

  • To study Level 2 Vocational qualifications you must have achieved at least 4 grade 3 GCSEs.
  • A willingness to collect, organise and interpret information to produce a portfolio of work.
  • The ability to work independently and to meet deadlines.

The coursework is based on information collected through the research of business organisations.  You will study the Specialist Unit ‘Training and Employment’ and students are also expected to undertake work experience.

You will require at least a Merit to progress to Level 3.

Other Complementary Subjects

If you decide to study for the BTEC First Diploma you can also study for an additional GCSE qualification or Level 2 numeracy and literacy.

What You Can Do After This Course

BTEC First Business allows you to progress to BTEC National Business or other advanced level vocational subjects as well as AS Levels.  Students could also move to a modern apprenticeship or other employment.
